Old shell , bullet and casing ?

Hi there, in my gun junk i found a shell, it is 1 inch long over all, has a brass base with no rim, has a small pin sticking out of the side at the bottom ,it is 3/8ths of an inch wide and the case is 9/16 high, it has 9 ELEY on the bottom. anyone know what type of gun fires this round?

    Sirbobby is right, it is a pin fire bullet. Here is what a pin fire revolver looks like:

    The only explanation I would have for this wacky design is a transition from muzzleloaders/ball&cap to cartridge fired firearms.

    Sounds like a pinfire round. Does it look like the picture?

    The picture shows a different caliber - many early pistols of this type were French made.
