How would a doctor determine if I was a suitable stem cell donor for my sister?
I'm wondering what kind of tests are necessary.

First they would do blood tests to see if you match. Its dna testing to find your HLA (human leukocyte antigen) tissue type. If you are a match, they will do a lot of general phsyical type testing to make sure you are healthy enough to donate. They will do more blood tests to check what viral infections you have (they wont let you donate if you have aids or hep, but there are other viruses like cmv or hsv1 that nearly everyone has, that they would just need to be aware of). They will probably test your heart with an ekg or echo or stress test, but thats no big deal. They will take a very extensive medical history, and it is very very important that you are completly honest about everything. If you lie about something, it could cause her to die during transplant.
And that is pretty much it.

Since you are donating to your sis, some things may be ok with consent of what the risks are. http://www.marrow.org/DONOR/When_You_re_Contacted_... - 1 decade ago
They would draw blood and possibly do a spinal tap on you to see if you were and eligible donor.

They would run tests on you and your sister to be sure that your both a match. Just because your sister's doesn't mean your a match.
