What can I plant this late in the season?

My 4 year old son has taken a sudden interest in gardening. In the house we just moved into, we have a small garden. Is it too late to grow something. Anything at all would be fine for me. I live in the Southern Idaho/Northern Utah area.

this is a great time of year to do a fall/winter garden

peas, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, swiss chard.

also you could plant various bulbs for spring such as daffodil, tulip. crocus. It is fun to plant the bulbs and then see them in the spring when there is nothing blooming yet. It is also a good lesson in patience- important in gardening and life.

Or you could just get some rye grass seed

and write his name with it

    in the future garden space,

that would be fun and have quick results.
