Garbage disposal?

It looks as though our garbage disposal has died. It doesn't run any more; it just hums when you turn it on. Needs to be replaced, I expect. So, what do I need to find out before I go to the hardware store to get a replacement? Pipe diameter, size of unit, whatever--I don't know what's standard and what depends on your sink. I hate to go to the store only to find I need to go home to get more information before I can come back and buy the thing. (We're in the US, btw.)

Update:

Well Moon, damned if you weren't right. I searched around in there, looking for something that might be jammed, and sure enough, there was one of our children's spoons jammed in there real good. Sweet! You saved me a lot of time and effort this coming weekend.

It's jammed with a bone or a hard object. If u have a ISE...under the sink and under the G/D...there is a hex slot for a hex wrench. ISE usually have 1 for u...but u must have misplaced it. If U have a Hex wrench or u can buy 1 in a hardware store for ISE G/D. Stick it in that slot and work it free by turning it left or right. Once u free it I guarantee it will work...Because u told me it just humms. But it won't turn.

There is a red square button for RESET button if it don't make any sound at all. It blow a fuse....lol Good Luck...I hope that help.

Actually shouldn't be much to know ....except size of existing unit. Take a good look at what's happening under there and go for it...........also a few measurements so you don't get to big..........sounds like the other one was great....maybe you will get lucky and find one like it.........I screwed up the last time I replace mine..........when all else fails....read the directions and of course I didn't till I had It all together...and I had to disassemble and drive the knock out plug out of it......I was laughing myself silly.........dummy:) directions what's that????? any way all the best.......get the wife handing you tools and you got it made.......good luck

a broom stick might unjam it! also a garbage disposer it rated by horsepower a the hole is generally the same size. its a pretty easy job just remember to knock the dishwasher drain plug out of the hole in the disposer when you install it( use a screw driver).
