Does anyone have Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia and if so what have you had done and has it worked?

Update:

Thanks for your suggestions. I have tried Tegretol but I am also diabetic and it caused problems with that. I am on gabapentin and baclofen and Lyrica plus pain meds. I have also had a glycerol rhyzotomy. That procedure made it worse and damaged the nerve. My pain is constant 24/7. I'm heading to another neurosurgeon and methadone. Then another surgery with the electrodes in my head. I'm at my wits end!

Update 2:

Thanks for the Yahoo group suggestion!

Tegretol (carbamazepine) is the best medication to treat Trigeminal Neuralgia as far as I know. They usually start at a low dose and increase the dose daily until the pain goes away. I believe they keep you on a maintenance dose for a few days and then stop it. There may be side effects associated with Tegretol though, such as drowsiness, dizziness and nausea. It is better if the dose is increased gradually, it will lower the incidence of side effects. Hope this helps!

Carbamazepine worked like a charm for me. I'm also on gabapentin (neurotin) for neuropathy down my left side. I still have some pain, but it is greatly reduced and quite managable.

There is a yahoo group out there too - that may be a good source of info for you :).
