How can I increase the volume of an audio clip?

Question

Please don't say something like turn up the speaker volume.

I have a very quiet audio clip that I need to add to a video. There is a deadline to finish it, so I need an answer as quickly as possible.

Also, my software is limited. I don't really have any software to do this that I'm aware of. I have a PC though, so if you know of any software that came with, or is free to download and safe, could you please provide a link.
Or is there maybe a way to do this in Windows Movie Maker?
I also have Windows Vista if that makes a difference.

If its a wave (.wav) file simply open sound recorder that comes with windows (start > accessories > Entertainment > sound recorder) Open your wav file in it and simply increase volume in effects (option to increase volume by 25 percent). Click repeatedly to increase again.

For other formats
Download nero buring rom from www.nero.com
Install it with all features enabled. Even though its a shareware you get a fully functional trail version for 30 days. There is a program in it called audio juke box and another audio converter. In either of these you can modify you audio, increase volume decrease volume, fade it, mix it with another track or whatever you want and in audio jukebox you can even create multi channel project like 5.1 or 7.1.
