Any idea why my Firefox keeps crashing when I do a Google or Yahoo search?

Started about a week ago, on both my PC-installed and Portable (thumbdrive) application versions. Through the main search box, or the side box, and even from the Mozzilla start page. Works fine if I type in a specific site. Wikipedia and IMDB and other search engines work fine. Already did virus and spyware scans. Pattern files up to date every night. Did a system restore to a while before it started. No other problems of any kind that I've noticed. I'm running XP Home, SP2, on a Dell Dimension 1100.

Update:

Update; I just tried re-installing it, using the last fresh copy I had archived from last December. No luck there.

Typing the following in the Run box from the Start menu: firefox.exe -ProfileManager just opened a new window. Not sure how to get there otherwise, or what I would do if I could.

As far as IE7, I had installed it right after it came out, and although it's better than IE6, it still sucks. LOL

Re-formatting the hard-drive seems like an awful drastic step. I've read about it a little bit before, and frankly, I don't think I'm up to it.

Update 2:

Ok, I think I might be on to something here. I figured out how to run Firefox in "safe mode" and it seems to be working now.

I have had this problem for a few months and have put up with it till now, most times when i scroll down the page i would also get a second delay,i have uninstalled it and reverted back to an earlier version of F.fox and still the same.

I have now uninstalled f.fox completely, deleted all registry entries etc with the free Cach Cleaner *google it* and type in to google IE7 download.

its now free if u are still on 6.

Have used IE7 now for 3weeks and its been perfect, has the tabbing and add ons as per firefox.

    only think i can recommend,.

be sure to create a restore point before doing anything incase ure not happy.

    Your profile may be corrupt.

Try uninstalling and then installing Firefox again.

    OR

Create a new profile by typing the following in the Run box from the Start menu: firefox.exe -ProfileManager

Have you tried reinstalling it? Did you set the system restore to a date before this problem arised? Worst comes to worst, re format the computer. Make sure you save all important files
