Are today's children overstimulated?

There are so many activities nowadays (computer games, fancy indoor playgrounds, amusement parks) available now that never were before. How do you think children will be affected in the long term when all of this easy entertainment is so readily available to them?

*I* get over-stimulated just going into stores these days. If any more advertising was launched at people as they entered most stores these days, we'd all be blown out the door. It's offensive. Since most kids get dragged around these places on a daily basis, it's no wonder they're a little over-stimulated (on top of all the toys/computer games/indoor playgrounds, etc...).

I am trying my best to never drag my daughter into grocery stores/drug stores/clothing stores or other places where the advertising to children is deliberate. We don't need to be around people who think it's a great idea to sell kids all kinds of plastic crap made in China (probably by children). We'll continue to buy most of our food at the farmers' markets and when we need to make a foray into smelly stores once or twice a year, (like Longs. Walmart or Target) we'll leave the girl at home.

I guess my point is that much of our normal daily activities are over-stimulating, even for adults--no wonder kids have a 2 second attention span. And don't even get me started on television--proudly rid of that!

I think that many children are indeed overstimulated from an early age. I know some moms who feel that there HAS to be some "fun" activity every time the children have a playdate. Why not let them just play outside with simple toys?

My kids love to play ball outside, and ride their bikes in our cul-de-sac. They enjoy Legos and Play-Doh, and other old-fashioned toys. Their dolls don't do anything special. We have no video games, and they only watch TV for an hour or less a day, except for movies on weekends. All three kids have excellent attention spans and can sit quietly for a long time in the doctor's office or church.

In some ways, yes. My 3 year old has SO many toys- too many for my taste. I've started getting rid of some of them. Yes, she has some store-bought toys that she loves, but I've also seen her play for hours on end with some of my spoons and mixing bowls, a card board box, etc. Or another one of her favorites is playing outside in the dirt with a shovel and bucket, collecting rocks and leaves. I think parents definitely have the ability to put the toy industry out of business.....lol.

I'm finding with my 7 year-old that even all this easy entertainment gets old and boring. He's "rediscovered" having fun doing all the stuff we took for granted - climbing trees, collecting bugs, drawing with chalk...even just wandering around listening to nature.

This is from a child that I thought would have lifetime thumb callouses if left to his devices.

I think as parents we need to stimulate our kids. But we shouldn't stick them in front of the tv. Go to the park, play outside in the dirt.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, yes. Imaginations are growing stunted as well.
