I lived in Vancouver for 15 years... nice place but don't want to live there anymore. As for neighborhoods...depends what you are looking for. Richmond...yes has an abundance of Chinese and Japanese as well but it is still a nice area to live. Kits is expensive to live but very earthy and nice old homes...apartments are hugely expensive. West Vancouver is the ritzy area with million dollar homes mixed with apartments, nice restaurants and next to the ocean. North Vancouver another nice place to live... up in the mountain but the winters kinda suck...get socked in with clouds rain and snow occassionally. Burnaby is a nice area, new westminster, delta, port coquitlam, coquitlam all nice areas around vancouver. white rock is expensive but nice, surrey eh it is ok a little to over the top. Alot of downtown Vancouver is being built up for the 2010 games...suggest living near a train line that can get you around because the traffic is nuts. Houses...unless you are making big bucks, rent or live far away from where you are going to live. South Vancouver by the knight street bridge, and the bridge going over to richmond by the airport is nice...apartments are pretty reasonable. It is a matter of doing some home work and seeing where and what you want to be close to and then finding somewhere.

    Good luck

$280,000 USD for a house ? I don't think so. Maybe some tiny little apt. Vancouver is one of the most expensive cities to live in Canada. You also can't just move here unless you and you gf have work permits and can legally live in Canada. You can't just pack your stuff and move.... The best neighborhoods in Vancouver is downtown area and West End. I lived there and I found it a great place to live but you won't find any houses there. You would have to pick a different area such as Burnaby if you want to buy a house.

I used to live in Vancouver, BC. Most areas in Vancouver are safe but depends on where do you want to live. If you are not chinese, try to avoid the Richmond area because it's heavily concentrated with chinese immigrants. I am not racist but most of the signs in that area are in chinese characters so you will have a hard time to find yourself around.

Apartments are more expensive near Skytrain (above the ground train) but it's better for you unless you want to buy a car.

Kingsway Rd is a road fill with prostitutes at night. There is an intersection on Kingsway and something (I forgot the name) where people dealing drugs.

Good luck, I hope that helps. Vancouver is the best city IMHO.

if you can afford it, definitely go to the north shore... either west vancouver or north vancouver. we used to live in north vancouver and it's such a really nice place. really residential and really safe. good schools too.

another good area would be the kitsilano area in vancouver.

if those places are too expensive for you, then burnaby would be a good choice. the collingwood area in vancouver is also a good place to live.

whatever you do, do not live in vancouver east. sure, you can rent a house for only 700-800 a month but it's not safe. surrey is also kinda sketchy too. there are patches of safe and unsafe neighborhoods.
