Does anyone have any good Gordie Howe stories on his 80th birthday?

Eighty years old today and it has been only 28 years since he retired from the NHL. It is only my opinion that he was the greatest hockey player of all time and that really isn't open for discussion since probably 90% of the people on this site never saw him play BUT for the few of us who did let's share some stories for the youngsters.

Old elbows looks like he could still play........I didn't really admire his whining back in the day about Gretzky and his records and how his goal totals in the WHA should count so the record was still his.....at least that is the way I remembered it. Been a while since that old hooplah so I can't clearly recall.........was I dreaming that LITY? He did whine about that back in the 80's or 90's, didn't he?

Source(s): One I just came across....not mine but... "The funniest story I ever heard of Gordie was told by Phil Esposito on XM a few years back. I hope I get this right...Phil said just a few years ago he was playing with Gordie in a charity tournament against some punk kids who were skating too fast and obviously enjoying the fact that they were playing against Howe and Espo. Phil told them to slow it down a bit and they didn't. There was a stoppage and Phil turned around a heard a thump. One of the kids was face down on the ice in a heap. "Now, will you slow it down" Gordie said while he skated away."

The Gordie Howe hat trick is a goal, an assist, and a fight, all in one game. This is probably more entertaining for fans of the game than an actual hat trick where a guy scores three goals because this one involves a fight, which is one of the most exciting parts of the game that fans on both sides of the border love to death. Everybody in the game who talks against fighting saying that nobody likes it anymore has not watched and listened to fan reactions after fights during games. Don Cherry has, and he says let them go. In conclusion, the Gordie Howe hat trick is a goal, an assist and a fight in the same game. Not done that much, but always entertaining when it happens.

  • I played against the *******...................and Maurice Richard was a MUCH better player! Throw in Gretzky, Lemieux, and Orr...............and Howe barely makes the top 5!

Gordie was the original whiner...............Beliveau was a whiner too. Brett Hull and Mario Lemieux still take the whiney cake though.

Having never worked in the WHA, and only scouted a few games there................Gordie can count all his goals there all he wants, but the WHA competition was watered down worse than the the 80s and 90s NHL.

When he practiced with the Detroit Vipers a few years back, he told the players to take no mercy on him. During the last practice Dan Kesa had to get by him, and figured he would skate around him (Gordie was slow by 70) and when Kesa tried to fake him.....Gordie just let him have it and knocked Kesa flat of his hiney...........and Kesa said he felt that hit for days...like no other hit
