Has anyone ever heard of Pet Health Insurance?

I can't speak for the actual site, but pet health insurances are real. The ones we have here covers unexpected vet bills, sickness, injury. They will not cover vaccinations, yearly check-ups, spay, neuter - all the standard stuff. They will cover if your pet develops diabetes, has an accident and needs surgery etc.

As with all insurances it's a matter of weighing up the advantages and disadvantages. The majority of pets will not require unexpected, expensive medical treatment, but some do...and when they do the bills can quickly run up. The not-yet-insured pup of a friend of mine broke her leg right at the elbow joint and the bill ended up around 7000 USD, another friend's uninsured dog developed diabetes and did not react to treatment, the bill was 4000 USD.

Up until now, my pets have not been insured. I've had unexpected vet bills all in all for maybe 2000 USD over the past 18 years. With the insurance costs here and the number of pets I have/have had, their insurance would have cost me 4700 USD. I will insure my new pup when I get her this spring, but my cats will remain uninsured.

It's a calculated risk I'm taking with the cats, but a part of it is also that I would be able to find the money to cover unexpected vet bills. If you can't do that, then perhaps insurance is the way to go, even if it turns out it doesn't pay, I can't imagine anything worse than having to give away a pet or put it to sleep because I couldn't afford the treatment required to give it a normal, healthy life.

I know that "Banfield" at the "PetsMart" Stores have insurance for pets. I had to get it for my sheltie because it was cheaper to get it for a year than to pay the $2,000. vet bill... as soon as a dog or a cat needs x-rays your bill goes thru the roof!! and forget about an operation. The insurance covers a lot and it helps with the teeth cleaning, the shots and the major stuff that cost so much...I was paying like $32 a month but my bill was unreal. Also there are "low cost pet vaccination clinics" that you can take your pets yearly and don't have to pay for the extras. Check: www.happypet.com and see if they have them in your area. I didn't check the link because it's late and I feel lazy, but I can tell you with 100% certainty that there are a growing number of pet health insurance companies out there.

Considering that the average pet has at least one major surgery in their lifetime, and the cost of vaccines and of course neutering (provided the owner of the cat or dog is responsible enough to do the right thing and get their pet altered at the appropriate age) can really add up, it shouldn't seem like a joke. :o

A friend of mine has pet insurance, not sure of the name of it. She says that it does help, but it works by reimbursing you. In other words, if your pet gets sick, you still have to come up with the money at the vet up front, then you turn in the claim and the insurance will send a payment later. She says it usually takes about a month. So, it IS good in the long run, but you still have to come up with the money at first, even in emergencies.

yeah, its real it keeps pets insured from deathly injuries and diseases. But personally, the people i know who have gotten it said it wasn't worth it.

yes i have and it is real, but why would you get it? unless you don't take care of your pets you don't really need it.

It's real but I've never carried it on any of my cats. We've always been able to pay for vet care for them.

wow dude. they have insurance for EVERYTHING. you could insure a peice of paper if you wanted to. you would just have to pay for the sercurity of paper. you can insure parts of your body if you want.

you can even insure internet webpages, like for server crashes and stuff. you can insure ANYTHING

yes. it is real! i think allstate insurance has it. my mom has it for her cats and her dog and her horses. it saved her a ton i guess.
