Side effects with Xeloda?

I was on Xeloda and had the hand/foot syndrome. I took myself off it after a 6 week course because my hands were so painful. I couldn't even tear open a packet of sweetener. Has anyone else experienced this and if so what chemo did they go on afterwards?

Update:

Obviously I discussed this with my oncologist. I was 2 weeks on, one week off for 3 sessions, thus 6 weeks of taking it with a break in between. I see my Dr. next week and we will decide on what the next step is. All I wanted to know was who had it and what their next step was.

that is a very common side effect of Xeloda. Does your physician know you stopped it? It's possible that after your hands start to heal you can start back at a lower dose. There are many treatments out there for cancer, so I can't guess what you'd be put on next seeing as I have no idea what type of cancer you have. Also, try keeping vaseline on your hands and wearing gloves at night to help with the cracking.

As above, common side effect, which is predominantly dose-related.

Not sure about "6 week course"; usually given two weeks straight followed by one week break; can at times be given one week on, one week off.

In any case, rather than throwing it out, I would recommend discussing dose reduction, as it preserves a therapeutic option for you... I use xeloda frequently, and believe once you get the dose right for the patient, it is a great therapy.

    God bless, best wishes
