His name is TOPO GIGIO, and he is an almost-50 year-old soft foam rubber (1/2 pound was used to make him in 1958, by artist Maria Perego)mouse with dreamy eyes and a childish personality. He was the first puppet to be controlled by sticks-- instead of string--by 3 people dressed in black and behind a black screen so the sticks could not be seen by the audience. He first appeared in ITALY for a children's TV program, & is voiced by GIUSEPPE (PEPPINO) MAZZULLO. He made his first appearance on Ed Sullivan's Variety Show on 14 April 1963, and made 92 appearances total, including the show's final episode in 1971. He ended each visit with his famous catch-phrase "Keesa me goo'night, Eddie," at which time Sullivan would laugh (not easy to make him do) and kiss him on the nose. Topo would act embarrassed, and then say, if I remember right, "Oh, t'anka you, Eddieee." So popular with children, he is still seen on TV around the world today, even on some Public TV stations in the US that have Sullivan reruns.
