How do I play a DVD from my handicam and burned with Nero using WMP on my Vista Basic Computer.?

The captured video plays fine from the hard disk with WMP. When I burn the DVD it plays fine in a DVD player or another computer (XP Pro with WMP 11) but will not play from the DVD on my Vista machine. Lowering the resolution or quatiy setting does not help. If a codec was missing I don't think it would play from the hard disk.

Update:

Widows media player cannot play any DVD video file from a DVD, it can play CD audio files from a CD. It Can play any DVD file from the hard disk. I have made ISO's AVI's DVD's MPEG-2 and all play from the hard drive none play from a DVD burned by Nero. Other commercial DVD's do not play as well.

All other media players including VLC, NERO showtime, PowerDVD and Real player can play the DVD from the DVD itself only WMP cannot play the DVD.

Can you play other DVD movies on your Vista machine?

I only have used Home Premium and Ultimate. Both of those have built in DVD player codec, but I don't know if Basic includes one. It is likely that the video file from your hard drive would be in a different format than the mpeg 2 files on the DVD.

If you can't play any DVD's, you will need to install a codec or player. VLC Media Player is free.

You know, in all my years as a tech, I have to say, I've overcome that obstacle by using http://www.divx.com/

It has just about any codec you need. It is a Media Player as well as a Converter, Burner, moviemakers girlfriend, and more.

Best of all, it's free. There IS a paid version that I can not stress enough. It's incredible and you get a taste for the 1st 30 or 60 days I think. Check it out....

You could also use DVD Santa to reburn the DVD into a standard DVD format. Just use what you have on DVD now for a source and let her rip. DivX can do this too (FYI) for a month or two lol. Downside to DVD Santa is a 5 minute tag in the top and bottom most portion of the screen. Goes away and really isn't that intrusive. http://www.majorgeeks.com/
