How can I convert a MPEG movie clip into an appropiate format so I can play it back on a common DVD player?

If you don';t understand my question, here's an explanation: I have a MPEG movie clip which I want to convert and burn onto a blank DVD-R disc so I can later on play it on a commercial DVD player as any other DVD movie. What can I do? (and to all those law enforcers out there, don't worry. The movie clip is quite short and has no copyright attached to it).

find and download "101 AVI MPEG WMV Converter". its excellent i have trial version and my brother installed it so i dont know where to get it but it converts video really well. i converted all my videos into wmv's so they would play on my xbox 360. i had to fiddle with the output quality but after about 10 mins i got it right.
