You did not say what state or city you live in and that would help. IF you live in an area that gets cold during the winter months you should leave the furnace on and set the thermostat around 55 degrees. That will then provide enough heat to keep pipes from freezing and bursting pipes. Unplug small appliances (toasters, tv, stereo, etc)
A lot of people will use a timer and have light(s) come on in the evening so the house looks occupied. Stop deliver of all mail and newspapers.
If you live in a snow area, arrange for someone to clean your driveway and walks after the snow fall.
