What should I look for in purchasing a new TV?

I'm about to replace my 15 year old Sony. I am completely out of it when it comes to current TV technology. I watch a less than 10 hour a week of actual television, but do watch a lot of DVDs. My old TV is huge, I'd like something that doesn't totally take over the room. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Update:

My current tv is 28' - it's the "case" that's enormous. It seems to be a good screen size.

Since you watch a lot of dvds, a lcd is the perfect choice for you. It will last you longer than a plasma. It won't "burn in" which means that sometimes an image just satys on your television, and you won't be able to get it out. An lcd tv will allow you to watch the movies with a better resoltuion than an other tvs also. I think that your size is around a 25-30 inch tv.
