Can a person/society be ethical without (a) God(s)?

Certainly. And the opposite is even more true - that even with God, people can be immoral....

As a historical example, try looking up the roits in Canada in the 70s when the police went on strike. Within HOURS, stores were being looted, people being raped and shot and general mayhem broke out...

Well I think so, but I do not have any examples to give you. Also that depends on your definition of ethical. Just like religion, it is different for everyone. One person might think it is OK to take a one dollar because it is just one dollar, yet another person might think that is unethical. Also many people think it is unethical to not believe in God, so then in that persons view it would not be ethical.

Yes of course there quite a few counties in the world where there nation religion is athesism today, but they still get others practise there religion.
