i like ampegs and gallien krugers, but can't stand hartkes (they're either way too muddy or way to shrill, there is no happy medium)

ampegs are my favorite, and an svt 5 head on an 8x10 stack is a beautiful thing.

it is because tone is a combination of the bass, the electronics, the amp, the speaker cabinet, and you. each of these have their tonal qualities, and it is the combination of them all that makes the sound you hear.

i think rickenbackers are some of the hardest basses to find an amp that really brings out the tone - i've found that a fender combo (yes! a fender bass amp!) or guitar amp actually works best for those. jazz basses sound incredible through ampeg svt's, especially with a sansamp pedal. fender pbass sounds good through almost anything.

swr amps are for new-fangled basses of exotic wood and funny colored fingerboard. not my thing, but it takes all kinds.

play your bass through as many amps as possible and find your sound.

Look at the frequency response curve of the amp and the speaker, and the pickup on the bass. Try to get all three to match.
