Does God or the Universe or Life itself cry when we kill animals to wear their skins and furs as clothing?
I don't necessarily mean "cry" literally.
4 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoCan one be spiritual and an atheist at the same time?
Let us know how this works out in your life if you believe you are.
12 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoShould I buy my niece a Winnie the Pooh doll?
I'm concerned because, as you know, the bear lives with a pig. And God Only Knows what goes on between Pooh and Piglet in that den behind closed doors.
Should I just not bring up that the Pooh Bear lives with a "special friend"?
13 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIf I voted for Obama, can I be a real Christian?
12 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIs there majesty and beauty and mystery in the Universe whose story can be told in fully humanist way?
It seems to me that many of our atheist friends do not wish to use what I know are their creative powers to tell of the majesty of Life and the Universe in a way which captures their mystery-- but which at the same time does not denigrate people of faith.
Can those mysteries and that majesty be conveyed in a way that it is true to reason and science but which creates a narrative that captures the human heart?
If so, I haven't heard it here. Attacking your supposed philosophical opponents doesn't count as advancing your position.
8 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoI'm a Protestant Christian (more or less) and I'd like to have a icon of a saint. Is there any reason I can't?
I'm a UU-ish (very liberal wing of the Reformation) Christian. I feel a great sympathy with St. Richardis. She like me was a lover of wildlife-- particularly bears. She allegedly (I realize this is ... mostly myth) had a cub (whom she "brought back to life") and her mother as companions follow her around her whole life after that. She lived in Alsace, apparently, sometime in the 9th century.
Is there any reason I cannot have an icon of her as a friend of God and a pioneer of faith? She's always depicted with a bear cub. I like that. God in the old testament/Hebrew Scriptures is likened to a she-bear protecting her cubs, so I very much like that image.
17 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhat is your least favorite verse (just one verse!) in the Bible?
19 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoLiberal Christians, if you were going to add some scripture to the Bible, what would it be?
Martin Luther King, Bonhoeffer, Tillich, Schweitzer, Martin Buber, who and what would you want to add to the canon? Why do you think it would merit adding?
5 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhat are some of the more poignant and beautiful passages from the Book of Mormon?
I am a non-Mormon. I am a Unitarian Universalist Christian; I attend a liturgically Christian, historically Universalist church. I will tell you that when I have attempted to read the Book of Mormon, I find it unreadable.
Could anyone with a knowledge of the book point me to some verses that would be meaningful and beautiful to anyone of faith (or maybe no faith)? I haven't found any yet, but I admit I have not made a full and demanding search yet.
No gratuitous nasty comments about Mormons, Joseph Smith (or Unitarians for that matter-- or Christians even).
15 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoTo be a "good Christian," do I have to believe that abortion should be "legally wrong,"?
or is considering abortion "morally wrong" enough? I'm just curious if, as a Christian, I have to believe that women who have abortions, or those that help them come about, be they illegal abortions or legal abortions, have to be locked up or put to death. That seems harsh to me.
16 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIs there a word for folks who believe God exists but who do not "believe in" God?
That is, "believe in" in the sense of "trust" or "give allegiance to." There's a big difference between the statements "I believe Obama" (I think he's telling the truth) and "I believe in Obama" (I'm throwing my treasure in with his). One can believe God "exists" without that mattering much to that person. Do we have a specific word for indifferent theists?
8 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoHow is it that Jesus never recites all 10 commandments during his ministry ...?
and then he announces that there are two commandments that sum up all the law and prophets? Does that mean some commandments are more important than others, or some don't count any more since Jesus never mention them, and he's the Author of my faith?
