Hindus: Where to start reading?
I would like to start reading and learning more about Hindu scriptures. Where do I start? One individual suggested the Baghavad Gita. Any suggestions?
6 AnswersReligion & Spirituality8 years agoShould I take medication?
Hi. I'm 18 years old and currently attending college.
I've been going to counseling sessions for the past few months. My emotional state can be summed up, I think, by "sad and tired". And sh*t. I feel like sh*t. And anxious, too. I can't (or actively won't) focus on my work and responsibilities, and I actively avoid and ignore major causes of stress in my life. Not surprisingly, I'm failing school. I self-harm, as well. When I'm extremely angry or anxious, I like to scratch my face until it bleeds or smash my head with my fist or against some surface.
My therapist suggests medication. I'm, frankly, terrified of pills. I don't want them to control my life and my actions. I also don't want to put some financial burden on my parents by forcing them to pay for medication for their f*cked-up kid.

4 AnswersMental Health8 years agoHardy-Weinberg Equation?
Hi! I'm having a bit of trouble working with the Hardy-Weinberg equation.
Out of a total population of 212 organisms, 46 organisms have a recessive phenotype.
Using the Hardy-Weinberg equations, how would I go about calculating the expected frequencies of the alleles?
1 AnswerBiology9 years agoTell me about the "Big Bang"!?
'Sup party people.
Okay, so, about 13.7 billion years ago, our cosmos expanded rapidly from singularity.
What's up with that? What was "singularity"? Was it timeless? Was there even a concept of time before expansion? Where did it come from?
Help me out! Thanks!

8 AnswersAstronomy & Space9 years agoAny atheists here with strong reservations towards abortion?
If a woman desires or requires an abortion, I, of course, want to ensure that the procedure be performed by professionals and under the safest circumstances. However, do any other atheists here have reservations towards abortion?
I genuinely believe that we need to promote safe sex habits and the use of contraceptives among sexually active individuals.

Will, for example, the Mississippi River form a canyon? Has it already?
Just wondering. Thanks!
1 AnswerEarth Sciences & Geology9 years agoWhy is the amoeba genome...?
... bigger than, say, the human genome?
Copy-and-pasted from Wikipedia:
The species Amoeba proteus has 290 billion base pairs in its genome, while the related Polychaos dubium (formerly known as Amoeba dubia) has 670 billion base pairs. The human genome is small by contrast, with its count of 2.9 billion base pairs.
Pretty cool, but why? What's up with that?
1 AnswerBiology9 years agoBought - but can't find - Steam game?
So, I just bought Mount & Blade, right? 'Cause it makes for hilarious and fun times.
Anyway, I bought the game on the Steam store - but now I can't find the game. It's not in my Steam game library, and it didn't show up after I restarted.

7 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoAre Schizophrenics "Normal"?
Please read the description! Thank you!
By "schizophrenics", I mean "people with severe, debilitating mental illness". Thank you for the insight, Rachel.
Also, *please* note that I insist on placing quotation marks around the word "normal" for a reason.
When I ask if "schizophreics" are "normal", I don't say so in an immature or condescending manner, suggesting that these individuals can't function in society. People are people, regardless of mental condition. I understand that.
From my scant knowledge on the subject, however, I've read that schizophrenia (among other similar mental conditions, of course) potentially cause severe anxiety and/or lack of emotional expression.
So, my question: Can "schizophrenics" behave like "normal" people, particularly on an emotional level. To what extent can "schizophrenics" express emotion, as compared to "normal" people?
How much of an effect does medication have, if any?
Thank you! I apologize if anybody takes offense to my (probably poorly-worded) question.

3 AnswersPsychology9 years agoHelp Understanding Schizophrenia?
I can't relate to those with schizophrenia. Obviously, as a human being, I can empathize with them, but I can't relate to them.
I don't know how to describe their experience in my own words. You know, to "walk in their shoes". I know that schizophrenia can lead to very troubling symptoms, like auditory and visual hallucinations, but I just can't *imagine" how to feels to experience having, say, voices in my head.
Can anybody help me? Refer me to some useful sources? Thanks.

5 AnswersMental Health9 years agoCreationists: Why oppose evolution (and other "contentious" theories)?
Why?
Before my "deconversion", I was Christian. Back in those days, I didn't necessarily any contention between religion and science.

1 AnswerBiology9 years agoSurvival of the Fittest: Hitler and Darwin?
How can creationists possibly connect Hitler with "Darwinism"!?
http://creation.com/darwinism-and-the-nazi-race-ho...
How many kids did Hitler have? Zero.
How many kids does an average Hasidic Jewish family have? Back in my town, numbers go as high as six or seven.
So, "survival of the fittest": From an evolutionary perspective, which one is "fitter"?
15 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoMy fellow atheist, don't you love...?
... being called "unstable" by our lovely theist friends?
After all, god doesn't exist, then eating babies is A-OK, right?
Owning humans as chattel is morally permissible! So is selling your daughter into slavery! Committing mass genocide and subjugating women, foreigners, and generally people that aren't part of your tribe is totally cool!
5 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoWhy do I physically harm myself?
For years now, whenever I would get very angry, I would lose control and physically harm myself. I vividly remember hurting myself, hitting my head and scratching my face and arms, as far back as middle school. I still do, although I try to control it.
Why do I do it? Is something wrong with me? Am I just seeking attention? I don't know. Please help.
