My name is Al Cole, and I have been a military historian and shooter for most of my life. I have been also a painter (artist), musician (guitar), fascinated by linguistics (German, Dutch, Afrikaans, French, Italian and Gaelic), and a scratch modeler (of wargaming scenery, functional siege weapons and military miniatures), for my entire life. I became a gunsmith in 1978, working the ropes from modern handguns, rifles and shotguns, to later repairing and restoring antique firearms, edged weapons and armor, using traditional methods and materials. In the beginning of the 1970's I served in the US Military. What I did then is not open for discussion, as I was then, and still am, under a security oath and a non disclosure signature. I was honorably discharged, so let's just leave it at that.

  • Why Do People Like Curious George Exist?

For my own part, it's to keep the brain oiled. Yes, Old George CAN be a bit annoying, but think about it in the larger picture...what the heck ELSE do you have to do while browsing these sites. Besides, what's wrong with a little brain-ser-size, huh? Take it from an old soldier.

Relax and enjoy, because this might be your Last Day.

    Hu'ah!

  • What was your most memorable (preferably hilarious), hunting experience?

Now, please let's not include the dear hunting "let me take my saddle off him, Lady"-stories, because quite frankly, I've heard them all, and those anti-women huntress stories tend to **** me off.

Nor do I want to hear about accidental and bloody injuries or deaths.

For example of what I am looking for; a friend of mine once was up in his stand, eyeballing a deer as he wandered into a very comfortable range. He raised his rifle and fired. He saw the strike way off to one side. The deer looked at where the bullet struck, paused, then continued wandering. My buddy fired again. That shot flew off in the opposite direction. The deer turned to look, then resumed his stroll. My bud fire three more times, missing every time...at less than 75 yards!

Well, the deer casually wandered off. My friend was astonished at how unconcerned the deer had seemed throughout.

Suddenly, my bud's 13 year old daughter came up and said in a low voice; "Daddy, these shells won't fit into my gun."

He'd been shooting her .243's out of his .308

"Al," he later said to me sternly, "...if you ever tell anyone about this..."

Tough luck, My Friend, 'cause here it IS!

    Now THAT'S COMEDY!

  • Tell Us Your Best Gun Show Tale!?

Many of us here have had to deal with the huckleberries stalking the lanes between long rows of tables, those fat belly'd wanderers shmoozing between long rows of gun show tables filled with slow walkers and even slower thinkers.

My best is the twit that scoffed at a Colt's Bisley I had on my table, priced at $15,000. He scolded; "Who in HELL would pay that much money for a pistol chambered in 38 S&W?!"

Too bad that the twit didn't understand that Colt only made TEN OF THEM!

(P.S. I actually traded that pistol for 8 rare Colts and $3,000 in cash. We both made out like champs.)

So, have fun and knock yourself out!

  • What was your most memorable encounter with a numbskull at your gun shop, or at a gun show?

Normally, I only answer on this forum, but I thought that this might provide a little comic relief.

After 40 years at gun shows and over thirty years as a gunsmith, I have heard some doozies. I just thought that some of you folks out there might like to share.

    Knock yourselves out!
