Better to turn pump off or run without DE grids temporarily?
Discovered a broken o-ring on my Purex 2000 DE Filter mount, and have ordered a new one--which will take a few days. Is it better to leave the pump off until it arrives (about 4-5 days), or to put the lid on the tank (was thinking without the grids installed) and run without filter. Obviously will not filter the pool, but would circulate the water.
1 AnswerDo It Yourself (DIY)7 years agoWhen do I need to drain my pool?
I have progressively had more serious algae attacks in my pool since this Spring. When we were on vacation several weeks ago, I had a massive hit--the pool was disgusting. I brought it back, but it begins to slip back quickly. It has been 1 1/2 years since I did a partial refill (about 50%). I am thinking it is time for a total refill to remove the organics that are feeding the algae, but am wondering from experts whether that is simply overkill.
Do It Yourself (DIY)10 years agoWhy does the effluent water pressure of my pool system drop significantly when I hook up my Hayward cleaner?
When I detach the Hayward automatic cleaner (and the hose associated with it), the effluent water pressure coming out of my pool system is fairly strong. When I hook up my cleaner, however, and the hose attachments, the effluent pressure drops significantly--and the pressure strength is not really enough to move the cleaner unit (it moves slowly, and can't really even climb into the shallow end).
I am going to try just a regular manual vacuum this weekend, to see if it is the cleaner unit only (i.e., I am going to try to eliminate the hose as the problem). I have, however, taken the hose apartment and looked inside each segment, but seen no blockages. Historically, this has not been a problem--instead it appears to have occurred with increasing severity over the last 6 months, with it now becoming a significant problem.
I appreciate any advise from those with knowledge.
1 AnswerMaintenance & Repairs10 years agoCan anyone recommend some padded goggles like Swedes?
Swimming in the pool, I have long preferred swedish goggles. I may, however, be doing some ocean swimming and perhaps a race, and really don't want to get elbowed in the eye wearing swedes. Anyone use goggles similar to swedes with a little bit of padding? What brand?
2 AnswersSwimming & Diving10 years agoIs there any way to copy taped programs from one DirecTV HD-DVR HR21-700 to another?
Our original DirecTV HD-DVR HR21-700 started having problems recently, and we received a new one. I have to send the old one back, but before I do, I was hoping there might be a simple to way to copy the taped programs from the old to the new? I can plug both into the network at the same time. I appreciate any tips.
2 AnswersTiVO & DVRs1 decade agoIs my problem just the o-ring again, or is there something else I can do?
I have a Hayward pool pump, and about every 3-6 months, I start having problems where the pump will not prime, and when I shut it off, water shoots out of the top of the lid. If I take the lid off, reset the o-ring, and replace the lid, it will work for a day or two, and then the same problem again. In the past, I just get a new o-ring and that seems to work for a while. But the o-ring itself looks fine, so I am curious if this might be a sign of another problem? Anyone had this experience and found it to be something other than the o-ring? Any suggestions of something else I can do to get that seal? Could it be my lid and not the o-ring? Appreciate any thoughts.
2 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoWill a Verizon Droid sync with my Outlook via Microsoft Exchange (e-mail, calendar, tasks, and contacts)?
If so, does that cost $15/mo through Verizon, or can I do that with the existing or TP-apps at no extra monthly charge? I currently have a Windows Mobile phone, and don't really want to upgrade that loses my Outlook sync capability, or costs me more to do it. On-line information is spotty, and different reviews say different things.
2 AnswersPDAs & Handhelds1 decade agoWhat is the plastic piece on my front bumper called?
I have a Volvo S60, which, on both the front and rear bumpers, features an additional "plastic" piece or cover, one on, for my purposes, the front left and front right, beneath the respective headlights. This plastic piece either fell off, was knocked off, or was stolen, on my car, and I'd prefer to order a replacement without going through the dealer (since it should be, in theory, cheap, and it looks simple to attach). Anyone know what this piece is called? A Bumper guard?
2 AnswersVolvo1 decade agoDoes giving blood indirectly increase my risk of catching the flu and/or getting sick?
My concern arises from the flu, but suppose the "disease" is technically irrelevant to my question. Does giving blood significantly increase my risk of getting sick (i.e., does giving blood decrease the effectiveness of my immune system)? If so, is my immune system weakened for a hour? A day? A week? A month? 8 full weeks?
Appreciate the input.
1 AnswerInfectious Diseases1 decade agoAnyone have suggestions on effective ways to kill rats?
I have used poison before, but am not really interested in using it again, as I cannot control it--both in terms of what animals eat it, what animals eat the dead rats, and where the rats die (e.g., in my air conditioning ducts). Snap traps work great--when they work, but 90% of the time, the rat eats the peanut butter and walk away unharmed. Glue traps seem worse than poison, from a humane standpoint and from my standpoint and not wanting to deal with a dying rat stuck to a glue trap.
I suppose on top of that, is there anything that works well to "chase" them away from an area? Perhaps ammonia sprayed in the attic will keep them away?
1 AnswerOther - Home & Garden1 decade agoIf I plug a Internet-Telephone based service into an existing telephone jack, will all of my phones work?
I am considering options in reducing my telephone costs, and one of the options if an Internet based service, such as Vonage or Magic Jack, etc. (other suggestions of such services would also be appreciated as a side question). My question, however, is that assuming I disconnect my existing landline telephone service, so the line is dead, and then plug a jack from my Internet-Telephone router into the wall, will all of my telephones throughout the house (on that same wired line) then work with the Internet telephone?
3 AnswersLand Phones1 decade agoIs there an easy way to fix twister rod on horizontal blinds?
I have three sets of horizontal blinds (think faux wood, as opposed to smaller metal), on which the twister rods no longer twist the blinds open and shut. Any simple ways to fix this problem? They are all the same brand (in the house when we moved in), so unfortunately--probably a cheap brand, but I am still hopeful there is a solution other than replacing the blinds.

5 AnswersMagazines1 decade agoAre there any health "plans" that let me pay a reduced cost for medical services?
Unfortunately not enough characters to ask my full question above. Are there any health "plans" that require me to entirely pay for the cost of medical services, but give me a discounted "group" rate for those services. For example, say my doctor charges $200 for a visit. He submits that bill to insurance, who will pay, per its contract, $70, leaving me responsible only for my $20 co-pay (so in essense, insurance is paying $90 for what would have cost me $200). If I cut out the middle man (and monthly insurance cost), it would not be so bad paying only $90 to the doctor. Anything exist that makes that an option?
2 AnswersInsurance1 decade agoAny good sources for black elastic straps for swedish goggles?
I know Water Gear makes black straps for Swedish goggles, but it seems relatively hard to find their products. Anyone know of a good source for Water Gear products (their website does not seem to allow for orders).
Alternatively (perhaps better), is there a place where I can find a spool of black elastic "straps" of the thickness and size of swedish goggles? I've found the black straps several times longer than the standard white.

I believe it is either 3 and under does not require a ticket, or 2 and under (with the obvious negative that you are stuck with a kid on your lap unless the seats next to you happen to end up empty)
Anyone know? I cannot find a telephone number for the Dodgers to save my life.

I read that Verizon was supposed to release a new version of VZ Navigator this month that incorporates traffic. Has that been released yet? I am not sure whether my phone (which does have VZ Navigator) will support the "new" version. If it has not been released, anyone know when it is supposed to be released?
