This is part of my h/w but I've spent hours trying to figure this question out but I just don't get it...
Plane A has equation r.(2i-2j+k)=12
Plane B has equation r.(-2i+2j-k)=15 (dot is not multiplication, it is dot product)
(a) Prove that Plane A and Plane B are parallel.
I'm not sure if this is right (my maths book doesn't have answers for proof questions), but I think that the vector (-2+-2j-k) is just a scalar multiple of (2i-2j+k) so therefore they define the same line. This particular line is perpendicular to both planes, therefore pA and pB are parallel? Am I correct in this?
(b) Find the distance the planes are apart.
This I really have no idea. To be honest, I don't really get the whole r.n=c (ie. r.n = a.n) in 3D vectors, but I understand them in 2D better. All I know is that the book says the answer is 9 units (the planes are 9 units apart), but I have no idea why. I would really appreciate it if someone can explain how to do this.
