I'm American man, and my partner is a Scottish man. What is the process to get me a visa to move to Scotland?
Gay marriage/civil unions are not legal in the state that I live in, but I know civil unions are legal in Britain. I am trying to do this without having to hire a lawyer, as I don't have much money, but I will probably have to. We want to both live in Scotland rather than both live here.
I have tried looking on the British border patrol website, the British embassy website, and the British Consulate website, and I keep going around in circles. The only information I am seeing on sponsorship for immigration is if the British person is a permanent resident, and I have no idea if a citizen would be considered a permanent resident and if it would be the same paperwork or if it would be completely different paperwork. I am scared to start filling out paperwork, as it all requires fees to be paid with it, which I don't mind, however it says that if the application is rejected for any reason (even if its because I filled out the wrong one) there are no refunds.
Also, would it be best for us to get married/a civil union in a neighboring state that does allow it or would it be best to wait until we're in Britain? I'd rather tie the knot sooner than later just in case, but there's no point if Britain won't recognize it.
