Considering so many dogs are euthanized, how much is too much rehabilitation before?
I am curious about this. In this country, millions of innocents and family oriented dogs and puppies are euthanized that are perfectly adoptable. But some shelters locally are no kill. Even aggression. So, what is too much before it becomes cruel to keep the dogs a like. It is really fair or kind to keep a dog isolated and call him a "lifer" while trainer after trainer experiments techniques, training methods and all kinds of non sense on the poor dog for the rest of his or her life? Is it ethical to keep 1 aggressive unadoptable dog a live while hundreds could have been adopted in his or her place that year?
I am having a very hard time with this because our local Human Society has over 40 unadoptable dogs that the public can not even view due to potential law suits if someone gets bit. And I believe that aggression and medically suffering should be euthanized. But there are a few "tree huggers" here who believe keeping them alive is the right thing to do. There is no convincing them this is cruel. They are unhappy, unsocial and are rotting in 4 x 10 cages for the rest of their life, while hot shot trainers keep showing up wanting to make a name for themselves and in the end - no results
I just wanted some honest and insightful opinions from those out there who know what it means to euthanize for space and may think this is just nuts. Meanwhile - there is NO intake of dogs at this shelter for the most part unless the ACO brings in a dog or 2. There are no adoptions most months at all, and this Humane Society is failing the dogs and the community. Some of us have been made to feel like monsters because we agree that some of the severe aggression needs to be PTS and intake of dogs and puppies needs to be on the rise. We could pull from shelters that are killing 100+ a week and get them adopted asap here. This is beyond frustrating and sad!!
