  • Anybody out there crazy enough to open a martial arts studio these days?

I would imagine that martial arts studios are folding by the droves w this economy. I've seen that a lot of them are using Birthday parties for kid students as well as the biggest money maker of all "The weekend seminar" for 500.00 dollars per person. Belt tests, buying dvd's, technique manuel's, shirts, patches, I'm glad a lot of them are going out of business, they were rip offs to begin with!

  • Kenpo Overkill Opinions Please?

I’ve often heard Parkers Kenpo referred to as an overkill art (I know there’s such thing as underkill)

You’re the one getting killed. Why?

Because of all the follow ups and extensions of techniques, I really believe

that after about 5 or 10 yrs. you should be able to come up with your own extensions. Kenpo people also get caught up in the speed thing, maybe being

faster than required, I practice Kenpo and these are some of my observations.

  • Most impressive martial arts masters you've seen?

I will say that I've seen a lot of them and besides Bruce Lee. I would say Ed Parker(American Kenpo) and Taika Seiyu Oyata (Okinawan Ryu Te) are the one's that impressed me the most. Why? because of their incredible skill at nerve technique and deep understanding of the arts that they practice. Thanks for your answers :)

  • American Kenpo good or just looks good?

I've boiled it down to one of 2 arts that I will study American Kenpo or Okinawan Kempo. American Kenpo it seems to me can work sooner for you than Okinawan Kempo, but sometimes just seems like flashy overkill w/ their extensions (which I view as fantasy karate) Okinawan seems very slow and choppy, maybe 1 to 3 moves. I know their is deep knowledge in their applications but I think you talking about 8 yrs before you can put some things together. Weapons study? How many lifetimes do we have? Empty hand would be more than enough to learn. Both seem odd to me at times

  • Okinawan Karate or American Kenpo?

It seems to me after looking at Okinawan karate’s self defense

techniques and looking at American Kenpo techniques, it looks like it would take

much longer to use the Okinawan systems techniques, much longer to make them flow

I think this is where Ed Parker was able to simplify Kenpo to use sooner. In the back of my mind though

I would still like to study Okinawan because of the hidden Grappling techniques called Tuite.

It takes much longer to perfect that part of an art than just flashy striking patterns. Just looking for

    Opinions Thanks 

  • Question For Advanced American Kenpo Practitioners?

I believe that the system Ed Parker taught was very different from what Mitose taught. I think that when you are studying American Kenpo you are really studying the parts that Mr. Parker liked and what he thought worked best. Not only for him but the average person. Just a great system, very fancy too w/ a lot of flow, I think thats what first attracted me to it. What do you folks think ? Thank you for your answers :)

  • Any individuals teaching American Kenpo in Kansas City, Mo?

I took kenpo years ago, I just refuse to take lessons anymore from big commercial schools, that make you buy their manuels , go to their tournaments, take their seminars, all this is very costly, just want private one on one lessons. I would be very greatful, thanks folks

  • From a Security Guards Point Of View?

As I sit watching the world go by as a guard, I look at people doing jobs like drivers for FedEx & UPS and think my God, I could never do that job!. I tried cleaning carpets when I was 28yrs old and that was plenty rough, now at almost 50 I wonder after seeing these people work, how long they can do that can of labor before their back's go out. I would say their through by the time their 40. Maybe they can get a easy job doing nothing like me. I tip my hat to them, hope you agree :) by the way they do make about 5 bucks more an hour than guards, still underpaid, in my opinion!

  • Security Guard Work?

After working in the Contract Security field for 11yrs. , I feel so depressed I can't even tell you. With only a high school level education being 49 yrs. old and not being good in school when I was young, I find there's no way out. People making insulting comments, Examples; Don't sleep too much, don't work too hard, employee's laughing and saying arrest that guy , don't let him in, like your gonna respond like someone who thinks their a cop. The most thankless job I could think of. Let me tell you the effect is so bad that I don't want to even meet new people and never bring up what I do(Which is impossible in a social setting) Never proud of the small paycheck I make. I wonder how many of you people working security have ever felt this way. I'm sure there's quite a few. All I can say is that I show up to work cleanshavin, very neat and do a great job, but the stigma of what others working security through the yrs. has long ruined the image, one that will never change.

  • Security guards need to be paid more, anybody agree?

Being a guard myself, I thought after 9-11 that the security industry would upgrade training and pay, very little has changed in contract security, it's still run like it's 1970, it sucks!

no wonder there's so much turnover!
