I spend too much time on the internet, avoiding all the work I should be doing.

  • Has anyone read the latest copy of Time magazine...?

The one with "Why We Should Teach The Bible In Public School" on its cover?

I just got it in the mail today, and am reading the feature article, and want to know what others think.

  • Why is it that when someone makes a public statement on their beliefs, or their way of life...?

and another person disagrees with that statement, the other person sometimes calls the statement "having it shoved down their throats"? What ever happened to freedom of speech and the right to live life as one sees fit without having to hide who you are?

I know that not everyone does this, and I mean this for non-Christians who feel that any statement on Christianity is 'having religion shoved down their throat as well as Christians who feel that gays and lesbians who actually publicly acknowledge the fact that they are gay, and dare to want equal rights with straights, are 'forcing them to accept the gay lifestyle' or some nonsense.

(I almost wrote 'shoving the gay lifestyle down their throats' but that seemed... well.. yanno. hahahhaha) Or anyone who can't tolerate differential expressions of opinion.

Why not just live and let live? Turn off the TV or turn the page in the newspaper if you see something you don't like... no one is forcing you to watch/read/ whatever.

  • I have the truth about evolution.... wanna hear?

There is no theory of evolution, just a list of creatures Chuck Norris allows to live.

  • Anyone ever see Godspell?

    Great musical.

Anyway, it's a religious musical that supports evolution. Really! In the lyrics to "Turn back, O Man," the lady sings "Old now is Earth and none may count her days..." which directly flies in the face of young earth creationism, a doctrine claiming to know exactly how old the earth is. Neat, huh?

Disclaimer - before I get blasted for posting a "stupid question - get your facts right" - I KNOW. It's just a joke. And a good song.

  • What do you believe?

Here's a broad and open-ended question: we get lots of different people with different beliefs here in R+S. I want to know what you all believe and why. Consider it a poll.

Me, I believe that the world around us is real and knowable and that investigation of it is a good foundation for a way of life and of thinking. I believe that a true scientist knows she does not have all the answers, but still trusts her senses and her research. I believe that there is a pretty slim chance that a higher power exists, and that religions are the creation of humanity alone. I believe people can live good and worthwhile lives without either fear of any god or fear of an afterlife, and I believe that people have the responsibility and the power to make the world a better place not according to the mandate of any supernatural being, but because it is good for humanity.

I believe these things because I think a lot about them, and they have proven true in my (still-limited) experience.

  • Who do you want to be 10 years from now?

What are you working towards in life?

I want to be finished with my PhD, have a tenure-track position at a research university, be married, have lots of dogs, and have the confidence to speak up for what I believe in (and not just on the internet).

I also want to have worked to ensure that the Intelligent Design movement loses its base of followers.

What's the best thing that happened to you this past week?

  • Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

He'll attack you and eat you if you stray from the path!

  • Why are people creating avatars named after someone's drink?

Like, Morning Star's Martini, Jim Darwin's Rum and Coke.... etc.

    Just curious.

I mean, believe me, I wish I had a cold .5 liter Kozel Cerny in my hand right now, but I am not conjuring one into existence for use on Y!A.

    Or perhaps I should?

    lol...

This is asked on Rand S because I have seen these avatars most on R and S.

  • Why do people use so many CAPS in religious quotations?

Really, I am not asking to make fun. I just want to know why, in religious quotes, certain words are always CAPITALIZED. I've seen this consistently - so what's the reason for it?

  • Isn't the Religion and Spirituality forum fun?

    I think so.

Some people probably post out of a compulsion to defend or state their beliefs, but my guess is that the majority of us, believers and non-believers alike, who lurk around here (when we have waaayyyy other better things to do), do so because it's such an addictive free-for-all! Emotions and controversy abound! Everyone gets a chance to pull out their six-shooters and go after those they dislike!

It's the Wild West of the WWW!

  • My car died suddenly...?

while I was stopped at an intersection. After a few swear words, I was able to start it right up again, and I haven't had a problem with it since (this was earlier today and I've driven it a few more times since). It's a 1994 Mercury Topaz, and it's recently had a lot of work done to it, and I haven't ever had this problem with it before. It's got a full tank of gas. It's also really cold out today (-3, with wind chill -18) so I imagine that makes a difference, but my real question is,

Is this something I need to worry about if it just happened once?

    Thanks :)

  • Have you ever shape-shifted?

Okay, this sounds ridiculous, and it is. I don't believe in anything supernatural, including shape-shifters. However, after hearing people post answers to other questions who believe they have shape-shifted, I just gotta know what they think happened to them. Tell me your best shape-shifting story.

  • Just curious... What the crap is with the bad spelling and grammar in many of the questions on this site?

    Seriously...

Do people know how to spell and write complete sentences anymore?

Or do we just not care?

  • Why does the hot water work in my sinks but not my shower?

My shower gets warm, but barely, but by kitchen sink still gets very hot fairly quickly, as does my bathroom sink. My water heater (gas, standing pilot ignition) is fairly new, from 2002. This thing with the shower seemed to start a few days ago and with each passing day it has taken longer and longer for the water to get warm, and the max temp it reaches has been lower and lower. I haven't touched my heater since the fall, when I bled off some of the water as routine maintenance. Can anyone help? Thanks.
