  • What is the carbon-oxygen double bond energy?

Such as what occurs in carbon dioxide. I can't find it online, maybe it's in a textbook somewhere? I would like to know the energy required to break this double bond, in kJ/mol. Thanks in advance!!

  • Why would a two-cycle engine now overheat with new spark plugs?

My 701cc Yamaha Waverunner ran OK (using 40:1 premix) ran well without overheating at wide-open throttle for extended periods, but would bog down sometimes if you gave it sudden full throttle from a standing position. It needed new motor mounts and in getting at them I had to temporarily remove the exhaust chamber. I also replaced the very old and gunky spark plugs (NGK BR8HS) with new.

Took it out this weekend. Exhaust and cooling systems seem OK, water streams way up from stern when running and from port-side when running or with garden hose atttached. Ran for an hour under moderate throttle (kids on board) no problem, no more bog-down when opening throttle from a stand-still, but then after I hot-dogged wide-open-throttle for about 10-15 minutes RPMs started to drop, stalled on power-down, and thermal switch starting cutting the ignition so I had to wait for cool-down and barely made it back to dock. I plan on taking it to open water next weekend where I can do a plug chop to read the new plugs, but not sure where to go from there, maybe to clean the carb jets. Thermal switch is OK, motor was noticeably hotter than normal.

Does anyone have suggestions on why just changing to new spark plugs might cause these two changes - eliminating the bog-down but introducing overheating?

  • How do you use Social Security - Safety Net or Bonus Check?

    A quick survey:

Supposing the Republicans DIDN'T cave into pressure and raised the debt ceiling by August 2nd. Also, you're a recipient of the Social Security benefits you worked hard for and paid into your whole life, but to make payments to bond holders, the Treasury has to stop sending out SSA checks starting August 3rd. Which scenario best describes what Christmas morning 2011 might be like for you:

    1) Nothing under the tree and instead of figgy pudding, a can of cat food for every one.

    2) Instead of a new Lexus vehicle with a big red bow in the driveway, you could only afford the Toyota version this year.

  • Plugged amp modeler output into guitar input by mistake, now guitar sounds noisy and fades out?

I have an Epiphone Les Paul (made in China custom) and Line6 Pod 2.0. Everything sounded great previously but tonight in the dark I accidentally plugged the cable from the guitar into the Pod output. Output level on the pod was pretty high and it was on. After that I hooked it up right but noticed bad sounds and fading in and out. I hooked up straight to a clean amp but guitar sound is noisy, fades in and out, with a scratchy noise that also fades in and out. When I start to play it totally fades out until I stop. After silence a note or two will come through but start to play again and it fades right back out. I confirmed same problem through my bass amp which I know is good, and my Washburn bass plays clean with no noise thru both amps. This problem is isolated to the Epiphone and it's unplayable.

What happened? What might be damaged, what might it cost to repair? Thanks!

  • Does the 3.1L V6 have any issues with compressor pulley tension or alignment?

In-laws have a 96 Lumina car with the 3.1L. In the 3 years they've owned it, the bearings on 3 different compressors wore out. They got a good price because when they bought it the compressor was noisy (A/C off and on), sounded like a PS pump howling when the wheel's turned all the way. They are about to have a 4th put on. Has anyone heard of an engine going through compressors like this?
