  • Old GI Bill and New American Opportunity Education Credit?

I have read the IRS Pub 970 and it mentions the New GI Bill (Post 9-11) where not all of the amount is counted against expenses, only the amount "restricted" and paid to the educational institute. Does this mean that the older version of the GI BIll that is paid directly to the student and is unrestricted also does not need to be claimed against the credit?

Along the same lines, DEA benefits from the VA?

The IRS suggests the VA website for answers and there is no tax information there on the subject nor do local tax assist people dare suggest either way, This could help many people with a refund depending on how it should or should not be counted.
